10th March Roslyn School- with Yolanda high frequency words- learned by sight, by memory of the visual pattern of the word don't sound out tell the word- repeat whilst pointing to it Matching-'same to same' necessary for learning if can't match triangle to triangle, not ready for learning Discriminate names amongst names Smart Tray- on website Why High Frequency words need to be instantly recognised- saves time, meaning can be lost, prediction can be difficult, some ar hard to know by phonics Searchlight Model struggling readers and writers are not using all the searchlights- phonics, context, grammar, word gecognition/graphic knowledge High Frequency Words should be taught- in class through big book word posters word lists guided reading books Teach word in isoaltion first Early Words Programme 1 to 1 programme daily systematic explicit short time 5 mins teaches word at word and at sentence level children progress at own pace assessment informs teaching 2 Key early Words Skills accuracy fluency praising for one, prompting for other- aiming to get both together 6 Steps to Learn Homework collected Probe teaching decision- same if unknown, same if too slow, same if more than 2 errors How fast? 5 years- 25 words in 30 seconds 6 years- 25 words in 25 seconds 8 years- 25 words in 15 seconds 5 extra seconds for s endings Special needs student- choose easy probe Word cards known words and todays words childs points and reads it mix with other known word cards play a game- word ladder game, 10 second speed race, slap!, chase the chopstick, match
